Plot
The story is about Vivian, a woman who was born into a family of werewolves. When she was nine, her parents were hunted down by humans in America. She fled back to her home country: Romania. She has now grown up and works in a chocolate store in Bucharest, owned by her aunt Astrid.
The pack in Bucharest has very strict rules and still live by old traditions, one of which says the Alpha of the pack must find a new mate every seven years. The leader, Gabriel wants Vivian as her next mate. Vivian can’t even think about it, she doesn’t want to belong, just wants to be free.
When Vivian seeks some peace at night at a local church, she meets a man named Aiden. He is an illustrator and novellist. Vivian distances herself from him, but he pursues her, eventually agreeing to a date.
Her mischief cousine Rafe finds out about their relationship, which he does not approve of, as humans are enemies to them and she should belong to the Alpha. On the other hand Vivan knows Rafe killed a human few nights ago, which is strictly forbidden by their rules. They are only allowed to hunt together, never alone. Rafe tells her, he won’t tell Gabriel about her relationship with the human if she also keeps her mouth shut.
The next day Vivian meets up with Aiden as promised. The date goes well and they fall in love with each other. Aiden also fled from America and tells Vivian his story. Just like her, he was “caged in” by his family. His dad wanted him to be in the military, while he just wanted to pursue his passion of drawing. While he opens up to her, she keeps her werewolf nature a secret.
One night while they are together Rafe interrupts and gets in an altercation with Aiden telling him Vivian belongs to someone. She doesn’t want him to get hurt, so Vivian, knowing how dangerous her family is, distances herself again from Aiden.
The following day Rafe tells about Aiden to Gabriel, who then commands him to scare Aiden out of the city. Rafe writes a letter to Aiden in the name of Vivian to meet up at an old church. Aiden arrives hoping to see Vivian again, but instead he finds Rafe. Aiden fights back, which makes Rafe angry, now he wants to kill him. He turns into a wolf revealing to Aiden werewolves are real. Thanks to his silver necklace he is able to defend himself, killing Rafe in the process.
Aiden gets kidnapped when trying to leave the city. He gets introduced to the pack as their next prey at their hunting ritual. Gabriel tells him the rules, he only gets to live if he makes it past the river at the edge of the forest. The hunt begins, Aiden runs for his life. He is able to deceive their smell and makes it past the river, but Gabriel wants him dead, so he follows. Suddenly a white wolf appears saving Aiden’s life. Gabriel falls into the river, while not dead, he gets swept away. Thinking the white wolf is trying to hurt him, Aiden slashes at it with a silver knife. Injured, the wolf lays down and transforms back to human revealing it’s Vivian.
Together they go to an abandoned building where they can hide. Vivian convinces the still shaken up Aiden that she’s not like them and never killed a human, she just wants to be free. Her aunt, Astrid finds them with the purpose of killing Aiden, but can’t bring herself to as she realizes how much they love each other, so she lets them go.
Vivian needs an antidote against the silver in her blood, so they go to a pharmacist, she gets antidote, but the pharmacist alerts Gabriel, who then kidnaps Vivian, she tells Aiden to save himself. He refuses to back out, he arrives at Gabriel’s hideout and equiped with silver he begins to fight the werewolves and helps Vivian, who chooses love over the pack and kills Gabriel.
Finally free, they leave the city together and head towards Paris. As they leave, the werewolves on the streets signal they accept Vivian and Aiden as their new leaders.
Werewolves
The movie features quadruped werewolves in the form of a wolf, they used real wolves. The transformations are cgi, quick and painless with a bright light. One can’t be turned into a loup-garou, they need to born as one. They can turn any time and they got full control over their wolf form, but the smell of blood can induce the transformation. If they get injured in their human form they reveal themselves with their eyes. Their weakness is silver and fire. They live in packs hiding their true nature from humans, because they are afraid of being hunted down. They live by strict rules and traditions.
