Female werewolves have been on the rise and continue to do so with When You Open the Door and up next: Devour. It’s an upcoming heavy-metal action horror movie directed by Scott Hansen, who previously worked on music videos and the movie Bad Candy. His plan is to build a horror verse with supernatural creatures and therefore Devour features returning characters from Bad Candy. Director Scott Hansen says:
Underworld, American Werewolf in London, Ginger Snaps, Bad Moon, The Howling, Dog Soldiers are my favorite werewolf movies. I’ve always wanted to make my own since I was a punk kid working at a haunted house in Virginia.
While Devour is a vampire movie first, it does feature a werewolf sequence you will never forget and will lead up to another movie. The werewolf of Devour is a new character in the Bad Candy verse, her name is Mae and she is played by Hope Jordan.
She goes through an intense transformation, it’s brutal and bloody in all the wrong right ways. The transformation was realized with practical effects done by Kevin Meaux and Oliver Kasiske. It took 6 entire days to film.
What follows is an even bloodier segment, which they call the “werewolf berserker” scene. Mae goes on a rampage in a bar, killing 61 peole in just 4 and a half minutes. Which might compete with Battledogs (2013) and even set the record for the most kills a werewolf have gotten in a movie.
Mae’s wolf form is tall and lanky, inspired by Dog Soldiers. The design sketches were done by Scott Hansen and Wayne Anderson. Wayne also built the suit itself alongside the other creature costumes you will see in the movie. He has worked on movies such as IT (2017), Jurrasic World and many others. He’s a veteran when it comes to creature effects.
At every screening Mae stole the show and became everyone’s favorite and fortunately this won’t be her only movie. She will return in I Am The Teeth, which will be a Christmas werewolf movie with inspirations from Monster Squad and Silver Bullet. The movie will star the wrestler Chris Jericho.
While searching for a lost pet, five middle schoolers discover that a bloodthirsty werewolf lurks within the woods. After setting a trap and catching the beast, they find that the creature’s human form is a young woman. As they unravel the mystery, a ruthless bounty hunter arrives to pursue the werewolf. While the kids fight to survive and protect their new friend, more attacks and disappearances suggest that there is another, more vicious monster out there.
I Am The Teeth is set to shoot in January, 2027, but you don’t have to wait long to see Mae as Devour releases in select theaters on October 9th, followed by the physical release on October 19th.
